Music

At Bourton Meadow we nurture every child to fulfil their whole potential.

We are excited to be using a new music platform called ‘Charanga Musical School’. The platform offers two schemes and we follow the scheme based on the DfE’s ‘English Model Music Curriculum’ which has progressive week-by-week lessons, covering all the statutory requirements of the national curriculum.

Learning within the Model Music Curriculum scheme is based on:

- Listening to and appraising music of different times and cultures

- Performing - Singing and playing instruments

- Composing and improvising - creating and exploring their own music

We are very fortunate to have Mrs Freeman, a specialist music teacher, teaching music in Years 2, 3 and 4.

In Year 3, all children have the opportunity to learn violin, ocarina and African drums and they enjoy showcasing these skills to their parents during the year.

Children in Key Stage Two also have the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments through individual and small-group tuition.

Children have regular opportunities to sing and perform outside of their music lessons. A highlight of the week is when the whole school comes together for a singing assembly on Friday afternoon, and children in all year groups are given the opportunity to take part in a musical performance each year.

From time to time, groups of children are invited to take part in external events including the ‘Echoes’ performances, organized by the Bucks Music Trust, and large-scale concerts such as ‘Young Voices’ and ‘Voice in a Million’.

We have written a Music Development Plan which outlines the musical provision and opportunities at Bourton Meadow. This plan can be accessed via the 'Additional Resources' button below:

Here are the end goals for our Music curriculum

Because I went to Bourton Meadow Academy:

I can play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using my voice and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression.
I can improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music.
I can listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory.
I can use and understand staff and other musical notations
I appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians.
I enjoy a wide range of music and can use music as a form of self-expression.
