Supporting Our Curriculum
Bourton Meadow Academy
Supporting your child's learning at home
We recognise the very valuable contribution that parents, carers and other family members make to children’s learning and are keen to work in partnership to achieve the best outcomes for our children.
Here are just some of the ways you can support your children’s learning at home:
- Reading regularly with your child. We encourage all children to read daily at home and we provide materials from school which closely match children’s reading levels to develop their fluency. Children also benefit from listening to stories being read to them, as this enables them to experience a wider range of texts, more complex plots and it also exposes them to new vocabulary.
- Practising simple maths facts such as number pairs to 10 or 100 (3+ 7 = 10 or 40 + 60 = 100) as well as times tables (4 x 3 = 12)
- Providing regular opportunities for your child to talk about their learning at home, as this helps them to consolidate and remember what they have learnt
- Visiting the individual subject pages on this website, which signpost you to specific resources and websites to support your child’s learning in this subject
- Supporting your child with the completion of homework
Homework:
Homework is designed to support children's learning in school and the the amount given depends on the children’s age and need.
Each week, children will complete homework linked to four key areas of learning:
- Reading
- Spelling
- Maths fluency (times tables) and
- Retrieval practice across the wider curriculum (which the children refer to as a 'Memory Dive')
Please click on the following links for a detailed outline of the homework expectations for each year group and more detailed information about our homework policy, including the rationale for our chosen approach.

Supporting children's general wellbeing can also help them do well in school.
