Art

At Bourton Meadow we nurture every child to fulfil their whole potential.

Our broad and balanced curriculum recognises the importance of the arts and we provide a rich environment in which children’s creativity is encouraged and valued.

There are three key strands to the art curriculum which are regularly revisited as children move through the school:
Drawing
Painting
Other mediums (clay, collage, mixed media)

Elements such as line, shape, form, colour and texture are explored and developed through these strands and children are taught key vocabulary, enabling them to describe, compare and evaluate artwork with increasing accuracy. Children learn about the work of a wide range of artists from different eras and cultures and are given regular opportunities to explore the different techniques used.

There is clear progression in the knowledge and skills that are taught each year, enabling children to build on their prior learning. Art objectives are taught through a range of contexts, making purposeful links to learning in other areas of the curriculum. Children are taught new skills through clear instruction and modelling but, as they become more proficient with these skills, they are given the freedom to innovate and apply them to create unique pieces of work. They are also taught to evaluate, edit and improve the artwork they create. By enabling children to be successful in their work, we encourage them to view themselves as artists.

Here are the end goals for our Art curriculum

Because I went to Bourton Meadow Academy:

I use art to communicate ideas, emotions and my understanding of the world.
I appreciate a variety of art forms and can discuss and form my own opinions on them.
I am skilled in drawing, painting and other mediums and can choose my tools appropriately for the art I want to produce.
